Nepal's Electoral Scene Sees Major Alliance Formed Between Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable development ahead of next year's general election, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the aftermath of widespread and deadly youth-led protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Tackle Youth Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the issues highlighted by the new generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which resulted in significant casualties.

"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.

The September uprising was triggered by public anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and longstanding allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Terms of the New Political Agreement

According to the formal agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad discontent with the nation's older political class. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's current political shift. He was instrumental in forming the caretaker government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.

Wider Government Consultations Taking Place

In a related event, the current interim prime minister recently held consultations with a number of major political figures. These talks included former prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the protests.

After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that conducting a credible election is a shared responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to ensuring a secure and open environment for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
