19 of Daniil Medvedev's twenty-one victories have been won on hard surfaces

A revitalized Medvedev secured his first championship for nearly 30 months with success over Frenchman Moutet in the competition final.

The athlete, a former number one, has had a difficult season, managing just one match at the Grand Slams and undergoing a setback at the US Open.

His varied form on the ATP Tour - and difficulties with his serving in especial - resulted in him exiting of the elite rankings and finally separating with long-time coach Gilles Cervara.

Currently training with Thomas Johansson and Goetzke, he has steadily advanced in the past month - climaxing in a closely contested competitive win over Frenchman Moutet.

This represents the player's initial trophy after the Italian tournament and first on a hard court since spring of 2023.

The win also means he has achieved 21 championships at twenty-one different events.

"For the first time I'm at a tournament with my children simultaneously, so to win a title is really nice," commented world number 14 the champion.

"This victory is in dedication of my child Victoria, because the first title I achieved when my older daughter Alisa was delivered was for her."

Medvedev, the former major winner, had lost his last six championship matches, comprising in that event previously this season.

The player's retrieving approach and recurring outbursts on the playing surface had prompted observers to doubt if his skill to compete at the top level was finished.

Yet the 29-year-old has implemented adjustments in the last few weeks, attempting to approach the net and play aggressively, backed up by an enhanced serving game.

Medvedev came back from a deficit in the first set against the challenging Frenchman, taking four of the concluding five points to take the lead.

The pair swapped breaks in the following set before the Frenchman, bidding for his first ATP Tour victory, took control to force a third set.

The opponent defended 4 early break points in a tight third set before Medvedev broke to that score to serve for the match.

Suitably, the winner clinched the title with a point at the net, with the Frenchman unable to handle a return after two hours and 38 minutes.
